Yankees Panic; stuck with Wang

Well everybody, welcome back Chien Ming Wang!

After Joba Chamberlain left yesterdays game with a bruised knee and the bullpen had to pitch 8 1/3 innings, the Yankees panicked. Chien Ming Wang is now a reliever for the Yankees, but would you trust him in any role of any importance at this time? No? Neither would the Yankees and that is why we now have a $5 million mop up guy.

The Yankees had 2 more weeks where they could have used Wang at AAA sorting out his mechanics and getting to the place he has to be, but due to the fact that they panicked with Joba's injury, they are now stuck with him in a role where he can't pitch much and will not improve.

He showed yesterday he isn't ready, by giving up 2 runs, 6 hits and 1 walk in only 3 innings. Somehow though, just to show you how bad he has been this year, that ERA of 6.00 for the day LOWERED his ERA 9.50 points to an even 25.00.

The Yankees panicked. They have no intention of using Wang as a starter, so they should have let him stay at AAA. Alfredo Aceves has been amazing, some people have compared him to a modern day Ramiro Mendoza and I happen to agree, he may even be a little more useful. The Yankees could have called up Dave Robertson or Mark Melancon and let Wang continue to sort out his problems in Scranton.

I don't know what the Yankees are thinking. Terrible move. As of right now, it seems as though Joba will be making his next start without any complications. Wang can't help us right now and can't be used in high pressure situations so right now, he is just taking up a spot on the roster. The Yankees panicked, and it's going to come back to bite them

What do you guys think? Should the Yankees use Wang in a mop up roll so he can get in work against major league players or should they have kept him at AAA so he would be able to work as a starter and focus on getting back to normal without affecting the major league club?

  1. I agree with you Mike. the pressures thatgo along with starting and the duties of a reliever are drastically different. Some rehab starts in AAA would have provided Mr. Wang the confidence he needs to get good outs in the Bigs. I also agree that this was a panic move by the Yanks, however, with the way we are currently playing (as a team, imagine that), I don't think the ramifications of Wang's early return will be as bad as we think.

On a side note, you run a very thought-provoking blog and it was my loss to have stayed away so long. It's good to be home.

  2. Panic you say well maybe, but maybe he will actually be better then expected. The usual Corey Sobel would have been a pessimist, but when it comes to baseball it's a different story and I believe given a starting role, not reliever, he can get the job done. I think that the Yankees just need to show they believe in him and he will respond well to that. It's like if you move David Ortiz to hit 7th. It's not going to make him feel better about his situation and certainly not going to make him feel like his team believes in him, which I think would make him perform worse. If you have peoples support then you will perform better most of the time or at least for some players. Love the Blogs Mike
