But Angel Berroa has to go.
Jorge Posada is coming back from the DL today and Thank God. This will be the first time all year that the Yankees are available to play their full line-up this year and yes, that included Brett Gardner OVER Melky Cabrera.
In May, Brett Gardner is actually doing better than Melky Cabrera with rates of .357/.449/.619 compared to Melky's .321/.348/.429, but that is besides the point. With Posada coming back, they will obviously need to get rid of a player to make room for him. I understand that few teams carry three catchers, but if anyone can tell me what role Angel Berroa is playing for the Yankees right now, please let me know.
Xavier Nady will be back in a few weeks and as we all know, Jorge Posada has dealt with some injuries lately, so why not carry three catchers for a few weeks? First off, it allows you to DH Posada more regularily. Also, if Posada is DH'ing, you can pinch hit for Cervelli or Cash late in the game, and still have another catcher to bring in. It gives you many more options off the bench. Nady will be back in a few weeks, so this will not be a long term thing.
Angel Berroa on the other hand has been with this team for a while now. His first game came on April 25th against Boston, so he has been here for more than a month. In that time span, he has played in only 13 games. In those 13 games, he has had only 12 AB, in those 12 AB, he has had only 2 hits (both singles) and zero walks. He is not good, he never plays, and more importantly, there is no way in the world he is only 31. Give me a break. Anything he can do, Ramiro Pena can do better. I understood at 1st keeping Angel around because you did not know if A-Rod's hip would hold up, but now, what is Berroa doing for this team?
So what do you guys think? Does Angel actually have a role with this team that I am not realizing? Does he not have a role but you still disagree with carrying three catchers? Or are you on board with the three catcher idea?
After the whole Chien-Ming Wang situation, if the Yankees do not DFA Angel Berroa, they will only be making me more and more upset with them. If it makes sense to carry an extra infielder when A-Rod came back, why doesn't it make sense to carry an extra catcher with Posada coming back?
Just goes to show ya....
I am never right. The Yankees designated Kevin Cash for assignment. Someone, please, I am begging you, tell me what Angel Berroa is doing for this team!?!?! With Posada back, Cash wouldn't do anything for the team either, but at least he would provide more flexibility, and allow Posada to DH without any concerns.
Even with this move, the Yankees still need to DFA Angel Berroa. Shelley Duncan can at least provide an occasional pinch hit home run and Juan Miranda would be able to provide some pop off the bench as well. Berroa, he adds nothing to this team except for maybe telling fun and interesting stories from his rookie year in 1934.
Mikey I have to agree with all your comments on both catcher posts. Three catchers right now makes more sense and if not Duncan at least once in a while will hit the ball to the outfield instead of Eight Miles High. Note the R&R reference! Also agree with Cervelli post. Part time at best unless he develops into something I don't see at this point but as much as it pains me I have to say I think you are spot on with these two. Now if you could dedicate a post to your captain and give him the praise he deserves all would be ok in the world once again.
